HK International Jockeys Challenge Night

With all the mouth watering  G1 action of International day ahead of us Sunday we wet our appetite with International jockeys challenge night tomorrow night and what a line up of talented horse men we have, of the 4 HK hoops only one is a local and that's Vinnie Ho, currently 3rd on the Premiership with 20 wins at 12%, Aussies Zac Purton and Hugh Bowman sit one 2 with ZP 20 wins clear on 44 at a staggering 23%, HB has 24 wins at 15%. The other representing HK is Karis Teetan, a Mauritian who gained his notoriety  in South Africa, he is 4th on the table with 15 wins at 9%. James McDonald whom you can tell is the next heir apparent for HK has been really testing the waters there this season having had 40 rides for 7 wins at an ultra impressive 18%.  I mean if you were one of the best hoops in the world why would you want to ride in HK, 2 meetings a week, 6 weeks off a ...

How do you rate 113/122 and not win a Caulfield Cup

We got off to a flyer with $2.7 rated Gold Miner GETAFIX winning after another Magic Man peach. My Comment " he got out to 1400m 2 back and caught the eye with +17 and followed that with 2nd  rating 92/92 both against the older horses. Back to own age and the Magic Man jumps on. He is the Gold Miner at $4.20." He was $6 into $4.80 late after money came for the bad value SUGAR COAT:. Nothing better than a value winner even better when you avoid the Fav. 100/97 was a new peak for the winner. 97/97 was a new peak for Supernima but a nice example of what I have been writing about in that his SR 84 on debut was a raw 93 so the 97 isnt such a surprise, his Xr was 9 better than the ...

Unique Insight's

There is no other form provider supplying the depth of data we do, we have traditional  Weight Ratings and Speed ratings which tell us who is running times faster than average for their class, once they get to town we get a sectional rating, where a horses last 400m is taken into account creating an artificial time that can be used to create a rating. If the Sectional Rating (XR) is higher than the Speed Rating (SR) we know the horse was strong through the line, if it is lower we know it came home slower than it went out. Not such a concern with leaders but for horses rising in trip its vital information. We also have a TOF (Turn of Foot0  rating which is a numerical indication of how many lengths  faster or slower. Runners with +6 and greater have been strong through the line. We have only had this feature for 18 months or so now and I ...

Kovalica franks his XR111 first up with XR 111 in the G2 Hill Stakes.

Is value at $34 in the Cox Plate

We kicked off with a average Midway where top pick Alabama State went to a whole new level with a dominant 97/97, runner up Treize only had an XR of 88 whilst 3rd placed Piraeus caught the eye with 92/98, he has bobbed up in the mid 90's in the past and if he can hold form there is a Midway for him. Ticks for Totoka and Apoolo Mission

R2 was a poor Highway, i said avoid in like the plague and that was sage advice with the $12.50 rated winner being 21 into 11 before winning with 92/80 Mazita 2nd with XR 85 and Straight Fire 3rd with XR 86 are the other 2 to get ticks.

I made a silly call here in making Medatsu a ...

Zardozi is Caulfield Cup bound after 115/116 when a bold 2nd

We lost Tommy Hooligan in the 1st leaving it 4 equal top and it $7.20 the field we had $10 winner State Of America rated at $9 but he was only confirmed XR 93 last time in and we got 110/114, I mean, perhaps first use of track but he did have 95/104 in a win same T&D last November. He had 2 lengths on lightly raced 4yo Flying Bandit who had won 2 of 5 previously and peaked here 3rd up having first run at 9 furlongs and his 101/107 puts him straight in the BB Extreme Freedom 101 and Agita 102 both get big ticks the rest all more than 5 lengths off the winner.

Nice work by Marvin to rate $8 winner of the breeders King Kirk at $5.50 and 95/89 was a nice first trip to the races. Runner Up Temptuous 94/88 North England 94/83

Star mare Via Sistina is Cox Plate bound after 111/115 in her G1 Turnbull win.

Lets start at the top and go straight to the Turnbull where our top3 filled the podium. Our Gold Miner Eliyass ran 3rd after looking the winner half way down running but neg split with 104/100 and Via Sistina who had already racked up XR 110 and XR 115 produced a new peak 111/117.  Worth noting here she is $5 in the Cox Plate with Japanese eraider Prognosis $4 Fav, we have seen him 3 times at 2000m at Shatin where he has a best SR of 115 and he is confirmed XR 111 running 2nd in 2 G1's the latest behind last years Cox Plate hero Romantic Warrior.. So is top draw. My personal doubt about Buckeroo getting a strong 2000m is now gone after the Magic One got 110/117 out of him. They ran the same XR yet this guy is $18 in the Cox Plate.

This will be a very strong form reference ...

Same same but different 114/108 beats 108/115 - 2 genuine stars

R1. I was eagerly awaiting the return of Gallant Son whom i had $2.20 off a predicted Sr 94 and we got 95/88 when 2nd behind 89 horse Stolli Bolli who ran a new peak of 103/101, that 89 was +13 so we knew there was still plenty in the tank. They are the only 2 worth following from this.

R2 We find the Trifecta in our top 4 with top pick and 1 x 3 play War Machine running 2nd. We were looking for 96 and got 100/99, so it looks like he has come on. the winner Baraquiel surprised me, up in trip off a neg split run jumping from 10 but the money kept coming and he made it 5 from 7 with 103/101. Looks most progressive. They had 4 lengths on the rest.

Import Eliyass outstanding again with 116/121

R2 saw our luxury top pick Gold Miner Perennial win after being $6 into $3.30, I had him 95 going in and got 98/89, even better we dodged the fav. Tickleberry Sr 97 and Tai Lung 94

R3 we dodged the over bet Fav Bear On The  Loose whose 90/82 was most disappointing, those that Dutch the value didnt worry with the $11.60 rated Floating winning at $17 96/93 was a solid effort and he will only be better suited stripping fitter over further next time out. Galeron 88/89 is the only other notable.

R4 saw lightly raced 4yo top pick Well Timed go to a whole new level, this was only start 11 and he had a best of SR103. 111/106 here in a soft 1 length win gets him an upgrade. The eye catcher was runner up Sharp Shock home 22.4 ...

The Magic One takes Buckeroo to 114/109 in a big G1 win.

We were behind the 8 Ball from the get when Quantum Cat was most disappointing on face value, we predicted 95 from him and got 92/94. so not as bad as looked.  I noted in my comment that the winner Whiskey on The Hill  was coming off a career best XR 90 at 1800m and would need to go up another peg to win here and boy did he rating 98/99 relishing the 2000m. His win bought cheers from those who laid  Flamin Romans who in retrospect i under rated. He did have XR 98 2 back in that handy Lincoln Rocks Lauding form line it was that SR 59 in SA last start that caused my doubt and again i break my own rules about laying horses with less than 10 starts. 96/96 is a nice new line for him. 3rd placed was 6yo Corona Lad who was a 99 horse back in 2022 and showed a glimmer last start with ...

How to play Orchestral at Ellerslie?

Dual Group One-winning mare, ORCHESTRAL will race for the first time as a four-year-old at Ellerslie over 1400m. She’s undoubtedly the most talented horse in the race, but is it the time to be diving into “the sauce”?

Okay, so most markets have ORCHESTRAL slight odds-against, rather than tomato sauce odds (odds-on) to win Race 7 tomorrow. She is first-up off 161-days with one trial under her belt. Added to that is she has ...

R2 saw Intervarsity most disappointing dropping down from Listed class but there you have another Fav beaten by up in W&D syndrome but gee 73/64 was poor. As per usual with Melbourne the weather forecast was not even vaguely accurate, if those BoM dudes were paid ti[sters they would quickly be out of a job, The rain came and persisted and we slid through the Grades finishing on a Heavy track.

We kicked off the day in superb fashion with the $6.90 rated Gold Miner Moby Dick winning the 1st at $12. he was triple confirmed SR 91 in debut campaign and 91/96 here says he has come on. Headwall having only 4th run in a year returned to best when 2nd with 89/94., he has 93/95 on resume just over a year ago, So there is a race for him soon. Fav Nadal was weak with 85/85.

Alabama Lass lays down a Spring marker with 108/117

The first bit of Black type was race 5 for the new season 3yo's  where red hot Fav Move To Strike missed the kick and never featured  in a leader dominated race. Mind you he was still +12 and will be better suited stripping fitter stepping up in trip. it was the  resuming Poetic Champion who  jumped to a new level with 94/106 +14.(Home 22 flat) The ability to control and dictate like that with those sort of numbers says this guy has a big Spring ahead of him. The runner up Savaglee was an eye catcher against the pattern 85/102 also home 22 flat.  This should be a strong form reference going forward

Hong Kong Is Back

The new season beckons and we kick off this Sunday the 8th with an all turf meeting at Shatin where the hihlight is a C1, all in all we tread quite cautiously into new season with all runners resuming , it takes a few weeks for the flow to appear but thats not to say we dont find plenty of winners we just need be a little more patient.

Its only 5 weeks later we have the first G2 of the season so it does build quickly

As I have stated for some time the $7 Plandemic pricing is over and HK only will be $14 a week as of this season and at that is well worth every penny, mind you with Jason now doing NZ and HK back on deck you really are best tp spend $330 a 1/4 and get the Platinum subscription

The HK only package is 45 weeks and gives you full form expert comment, speed weight and sectional ratings for all runs, rated prices, speed maps, odds ...

Moonee Valley

Another rock solid day where we hit 7 from 9 in our top 3.

Mornington Glory 102/106 says in for another cracking campaign.

We kicked off with best bet Dashing Duchess  winning by panels with plenty of even money about, we had her at 99 coming in way clear of rivals but 114/115 here was outstanding. MVY staying races seem to amplify for some reason, either way a stayer who you would love to own. It was a 10 point peak for all of the top 3 leaving her around the 104 mark in my mind. Its gets harder from here.

Can Francis Lui come from behind to win the HK Trainers Premiership

the interest is in the trainers premiership with Pierre Ng holding a 1 win advantage over Francis Lui coming into the last day but neither have a runner in the first but Francis has Call Me Glorious at $1.50 in R2 and with a predicted rating of 99 our numbers have him also top pick. So we could well be all square going into the 3rd where PN has Medic Alert but he is a $14 chance.with Marvin having him longer than that.

In the 4th FL has Forever Glorious who ran 3rd as a Gold Miner for us last start with 95/97 reading well, he will be in my top 4 again and must be a chance but is currently $16 in early markets. We had a yeilding track on Sunday and its really quite off in HK, the surface is like carpet and the Daily Variant was only 100.5, thats still a Good track in Oz, in the 10 years I have been doing it I have never seen a track what we would call rain affected. When you consider NZ often has tracks with DV's 110, or 10% slower than average, yet when the rain comes results are always mixed.

Romantic Warrior was huge, never on the track, never looked comfortable but still pulled out 116/112 from the Japanese runner Prognosis 115/109, he is an absolute super star.

The Turn Of Foot rating

The TOF rating

The Turn of Foot  is basically the difference between the Speed Rating and the Sectional rating with some alteration for beaten margin

I wanted to write something about the Turn Of Foot indicator which more often than not applies to those settling away from the pace, we all know that our racing is very sit and sprint in nature and settling in the first 5 has a huge advantage and many of these runners neg split , ie go out faster than they come home but often those that make ground from back and are well beaten get overlooked when doing the form. For years if a horse was beaten more than 3 lengths with no excuses  I would be looking at some sort of recent form penalty but I am now much more lenient on those with TOF's of +5 or more.

There is a race for him soon. They had 2 lengths on 3rd placed Renaissance Woman who rated 93/98 as we found the First 4 in our top 4.

R3 was the G3 Baillieu for the 2yo's and top pick Linebacker whose SR 90 on debut was 8 better than standard who showed tenacity ...

Evergreen 9yo Cascadian causes the upset going back to back in the G1 Australian Cup.

The first race of note was the Open Class Furphy Mile R3. We expected 96 from winner Arran Bay and we got 99/99 in a  classic example of what Andrew Beyer called OXO. He ran a career peak 100/98 2 back then bounced with 85/94 and bounced straight back with the 99/99. Rated at $4.70 was $4.90 to $4.40 before a strong win. The eye catcher was runner up in import Galeron at 2nd Oz start after being beaten 10 lengths on Oz debut. 98/104 at first go the mile and looks primed to peak 3rd up. El Soleado was another OXO example as if to ram home the lesson. He had won 3 on the bounce peaking with 97/102 the bounced with 74/82 and bounced straight ...

Is the Kiwi star going as well as in the Spring

The first piece of Black type was R2  the Listed Valley Pearl for the 2yo's and for those that played the strong debut numbers of Growing Empire held up, we had $2.20 and he was too strong winning at $4.40 but 88/84 was a big step down from his 96/97 over 1100m on debut.. Nothing else here raises the eyebrows.

The next piece of Black type was R5, The G2 Sunline for the Fillies & Mares. The winner Eternal Flame has gone to a whole new level this campaign following her G3 win  last start where she rated 100/103 with 101/104. Runner Up Rumbled Again  was 6 lengths off her at previous start ...

Import Post Impressionist makes a huge impact on Oz debut

We kicked off with top rated Electrica rated at $4.2 winning the 1st at $5, he won by 3 running a huge new career peak of 103/98. His XR's just keep improving the time in and it looks like the penny has finally dropped.

R2 was the G3 Manion over 2400m and my advice was to stay out with the import Post Impressionist heading the markets but i should of trusted my eyes, I put him up at  $3.30 and for those that played he was a nice overlay winner  at $3.90. He was staggeringly impressive rating 114/116 in a 3 length win and on that has the Sydney Cup at his mercy. I suggested VRC Derby winner Manzoice was on the way back after 100/107 last time out. He ran 2nd franking ...

Can Hayasugi make some history

Only 5 Blue Diamond winners have won the Golden Slipper, the latest was the Peter Snowden trained Sepoy back in 2011 and the last filly and only the second filly was Courtza way back in 1989, the first filly was Midnight Fever back in 1987. That has been followed by Bounding Away in 1986, Manikato in 1978 and John's Hope in 1972.

Since Sepoy's win only 2 Blue Diamond winners have found the podium , Shamaready the next year and

The race of the day was the All Star Mile and with Mr Brightside looking a smidge light I stated that Pride Of Jenni was the 1 x 3 value lay at $4 and boy was she outstanding again. She finished last campaign with back to back G1 wins at a mile rating 116 and 118, she resumed with SR115 at 1400m and was outstanding here rating an SR 121. Nothing like a front runner that can run time and she is an absolute gun. Mr ...

Its been a Gold Mining fill up on Saturday but Oaks winner was a huge result, rated 2nd pick at $3.90 she was way too good at a staggering $11

"Oaks winner ZARDOZZI didn't fire a shot first up but strips fitter is suited by step up in trip and although will be ready to peak next time out but does have 98/102 in a G2 mile win on her way to that Oaks success."

That was on the back of the $3.30 ...

R2 was the G2 Riesling for the 2yo Fillies and my advice was to stay out as there were so many unknowns. We rated the winner Erno's Cube at $4 and she was $6 to $4.  but only rated 79/80 and the winner was the only sub 23 second runner for the last 400m running 22.7  but these are the 2nd string 2yo baby girls and nothing worth following from here.

R3 was the Listed cCity Stakes at 2000m and our strong 1 x 3 play Almania came out and I hope you all followed him up on Sunday where I had him $1.70 when he won the Canberra Cup at 9/4. We ended with Military Mission on top and he ran 3rd as a $12 Gold Miner. He ended last campaign with 110/110  and he picked up where he left off with 103/110.The winner Serpentine is a staying type who surprised winning 1st up, he ...

Again apologies for the late scratching debacle. the early start played havoc with my automated processes. Thanks to the clients that email me to let me know.

We kicked off the day with our special Hedged winning. I predicted 95 and we got 92, he will only strip fitter next time out.  and  Sangroper Hanchi chased valiantly and has settled into life in the East.

R2 was the Australia Cup Prelude and I stated top pick Young Werther had finally seen the penny drop. He got out to 2000m last time in and won twice with XR's of 104 and 106 so 108/103 here when only 2nd up suggests he has come back perhaps even better..The Australian Cup will be ideal. Fawkner Park ran the best closing splits in the race but was over 3 lengths off the winner. 96/97 was good and he will strip fitter and ...

Can Lucky Sweynesse bounce back

Tagged: Reviews

Over the last month here and in Oz we have seen a number of horses get beaten by pure weight of money and we dodged LUCKY SWEYNESSE when nothing went right as a $1.30 Fa. The run was obviously queried by Stewards with ZP stating he wanted to settle much closer but the horse lacked his usual early speed. He still got home +12 when finally clear and on that the return to 1400m looks ideal, a trip he is 3 for 3 at and I think he can bounce straight back. Looks a sound Win bet Bonus Bets tyle at $2.30. ZP is off to stick with 2nd pick but we get JMac who has a 100% record on the galloper.

ZP sticks with BEAUTY ETERNAL who comes off a G1 2nd with an XR 111 and the drop back in trip holds no fears as he hasnt ...

Flemington Review

Posted under: Horsetorque Australia

The first of the Black type at Flemington was R4 the Listed Furphy for the 2yo's and the $1.80 rated Bold Bastille showed that 1000m was his go with a lovely display of speed 97/94 was rock solid with Drifting taking another step at start 2 with 94/94, they had panels on the rest and the only 2 to take out of this.

R6 was only a BM84 but I had to make mention of Another Wil who was smashed into 2's on by the jump and he toyed with them to make it 4 from 6. Following on from 2 big 3 length wins this time he won by 5 rating 109/117, those are G1 numbers we can follow him wherever they go.

R8 was the G1 Australian Guineas for the 3yo's and we did find the winner Southport Tycoon as an overlay following on from his XR 103 first up he showed he was a much bigger stronger beast this time around with 117/118 in a fast run edition. ...

R4 was the first of the Black type races for the day. The G2 Skyline for the 2yo boys and we had the the Slipper Fav Storm Boy odds on but he was just smashed in the betting starting at $1.18 and he did win easily enough but 94/92 was hardly awe inspiring with that SR 4 down on his SR 98 in the  Magic Millions. We compare his times with Straight Charge whose last 2 SR's have been 103 and 99 but both at 1100m. Mind you still far superior so I am not so sure the Slipper is as clean cut as many think

R6 was the Sweet Embrace at G2 level for the 2yo girls and the Fav Manaal was heavily backed and franked that Lady Of Camelot formline after running 2nd to her first up but 89/83 was well below the boys and franked 89/92 from her first up. SO on this the girls were inferior to the boys today

R7 was the G1 Chipping Norton and again we saw ...

R4 was the G2 Silver Slipper and our good thing in the Waterhouse trained Straight Charge rated at $1.70 was again outstanding. Home in 22.2 rating 99/97. He has the best numbers of all the 2yo's thus far and has untapped potential. Gai also has the runner up Espionage who rated 94/96 when first up and did really stick to guns. Home 22.1 which was faster than the winner. Not expecting much between them when they step to 6 furlongs

The Listed Parramatta Cup was R5 and the winner More Felons was hard to find. He was first up at 1900m and having only 3rd run in Oz but found absolute best rating 97/103. It is often the case with imports they find their best in 2nd campaign. Gold Miners were cheering the runner up Almania, we rated him at $4.90 and he was beaten a head at $17. 96/99 was very good 2nd up and he ...

Firstly thanks for the response to the mail out, I have responded to some and hope to get back to you all but thank you all for your response and feedback but it would certainly appear there are enough of us here more than happy to take Oz back to $21 a week. More on what has come out of that as the week develops but poor Nathan got clipped by a taxi bike and took a mighty tumble, he copped a deep gash to the head and will be picking asphalt out of his legs for a month. He is fine, a little shaken up obviously so join me in sending him some love and healing energy. SO we just havent had the chance to really sit and down for a week

R1 We kicked off the day with my special Dunkeld getting us off to a flying start in a slowly run sit and sprint. He was +14 showing how strong through the line he was. Runner UP

Can G1 superstar Romantic Warrior  do it again

I think there are only 2 that have claims to beat him

ROMANTIC WARRIOR comes off a 77 day break after a big win this T&D on International day that made it 12 wins from 17 5 of those at the highest level. He has won 2 of 3 fresh with his only fresh miss being that 4th on Oz debut before that big Cox Plate win. That gate is no spoil and champions have a way of overcoming the odds but the $1.70 is too short for mine.

VOYAGE BUBBLE was smashed into odds on last start before grabbing his Maiden G1 at mile with 111/115 outstanding and franked by an XR 115 the run prior. He steps to 2000m a ...

R4 Thoroughbred Club Stakes 3yo F G3 1200m

Our 1 x 3 play here was Saltaire who ran 3rd  in a slowly run affair rating 83/92 which was down on expectations confirms my suspicions that she is better kept at 1100m. The winner Brazen Style was only having start 3 coming off a soft MDN win with an SR 77 so her 93/99 was a big step up and suggests she is very much on the up.  Runner up Miraval Rose was also only having 3rd start coming off a 3 length MDN win with 93/98 also some very nice progression. We have seen over the years that at some point in a horses first 5 to 10 runs there is a big jump in ratings usually around 10 points, when that happens is the hard thing to assess. Our 1 x 3 strategy kept us safe.

R1 BM90

WATADEEL just lapped up the return to a mile, his last mile run was back in March where he was a strong winner 89/106 (+18), so no surprise to see 102/107 here. Von Hauke also relished his first run at a mile 101/104 was a career best and he had 2.5 lengths on 3rd. He is worth following. Our Gold Miner Excelleration was 5th but his 23.1 was actually fastest last 400m in the race with 91/101 (+10) a rock solid return.

R2 G3 Neds Classic 3yo 2000m

Riff Rocket was a raging fav starting 3's on and we again see a horse beaten by pure weight of money, they just went oh so slowly the winner Sunsets was actually a Gold Miner rated at $10 winning at $16 but that Sr 83 was 16 points lower than standard. They just walked. Riff Rocket was home 22.6 83/102 +19. I am glad he didn't take off earlier and have a gut buster with his target still 2 weeks away. With that 105/115 2 back ringing loud he will still be our top pick in the Derby. The winner is no slouch and that racing style will ensure he is in the right place in all his races.
