Bouncing out of bad luck

However you choose to describe it, and I’ll go with “luck”, a significant part of having success in horse racing means relying on events outside your control to work in your favour.

Race pace, position and condition of horse and rider, track and weather can only be influenced so much by human elements and sometimes not at all.

Identifying “bad luck”, when things go against a horse and then assessing how it affects their form is a significant piece of the racing puzzle that itself is part-art, part-skill.

There are a couple of horses across New Zealand racing today that look well-placed to bounce-back after not having many favours their last start or two.

At Otaki in Race 9, THE PROPHET stumbled shortly after jumping last time and was “chasing the race” thereafter. He only rated an SR69 but debuted with an SR88, but there was enough to suggest he could run closer his first start today.

In the last race at Ellerslie, SLIPPER ISLAND has had two “luckless” runs this prep being blocked at Hastings the entire straight before sitting three-wide for the trip last time. He’s a four-times confirmed horse between SR88 and SR90, so can also deliver far better than his SR72 last time and this race today looks like a good chance for him to do so.
