Is WHISKEY ‘N ROSES a Group 1 winner in the making?

The Cambridge Stud Northland Breeders Stakes has become the early-season indicator for a New Zealand three-year-old star, and while WHISKEY ‘N ROSES may be a late bloomer compared to some competitors, that doesn’t preclude him from being the clear horse to beat in Ruakaka’s feature race.

It was only last year that Crocetti won the Breeders after just one start in February, before storming to victory in the G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas and later placing in the G1 BCD Sprint, an open WFA race.

WHISKEY ‘N ROSES delivered a strong HorseTorque figure of 87/99 at his second start, dominating his opposition by more than 3 lengths in a 2-year-old race at Ruakaka over 1200m in June. Notably, Breeders’ opposition I’M ALL IN (2nd) and VEGAS QUEEN (6th) were well beaten.

The son of Belardo, WHISKEY 'N ROSES looks primed to perform at his best and potentially improve further following a strong trial at Te Rapa. The main challenge for rider Vinny Colgan will be getting the horse into clear air so he can sprint in the straight. Barrier 1 is a significant advantage with the rail in the true position, and a “no-panic ride” should get the job done.
