HorseTorque NZ numbers say that predicting the winner of the HS Dyke Wanganui Guineas (Listed) on Saturday might deliver a split-decision between BELARDI and READ ABOUT IT.

The market though says the latter deserves top billing over the former and the chances of UNBRIDLED JOY and SOCIAL CLIMBER aren’t much less than those.

UNBRIDLED JOY brings only fair figures from his two-year-old year, and I haven’t been inspired by his trials. He looks a big betting under.

SOCIAL CLIMBER was excellent winning on debut and doesn’t have much to find to be right in the finish, so I respect her more.

BELARDI revelled in wet conditions last season and returns to a track where he excelled. One key is his tactical speed which should allow him every favour on the pace irrespective of whether it’s best on the rails, centre-track or close to the Wanganui’s outside fence.

READ ABOUT IT has a little “x factor” about him and could be the horse to progress the furthest this season. His Otaki stakes win was brilliant in the finish, he coped well with a wet track, but so far, over the sprint trips, he needs time to find his stride and doesn’t possess much early speed.

Trainer, Robbie Patterson has NZ Derby aspirations for READ ABOUT IT, which is a lofty goal. Soldier Boy, who runs in race 7, won the Wanganui Guineas in 2021 before finishing 4^th in the NZ Derby. In over 20 years, that is the closest a horse has gone to achieving the double.

In essence it’s a long bow to draw from now until March, but maybe we’ll see the first leg of a big plan unfold tomorrow. Could READ ABOUT IT'S "x factor" be the deciding factor between choosing between him and BELARDI? The unquantifiable before the race in this instance, may become more quantifiable after and it's that hope that might sway the decision to have READ ABOUT IT on top.
